Teaching about Renaissance, Medieval, Dark Ages, Gothic, Romanesque? Use this worksheet to help students design a Coat of Arms.

I developed my own because I couldn't find all the information I wanted for a complete Coat of Arms all in one place. Steps are numbered: #1 choose of the 3 shapes. #2 Heraldic Lines #3 Fields #4 tinctures/color, etc. Included are 2 sheets of charges and some of their meanings (there's so many you can't count so here's some of the better ones). Teacher's Notes include the parts of the shield and color explanations. One more sheet are the furs/patterns and 3 examples of a full family crest with the Coat of Arms so students can see them all together.

On a personal note: I've done this project just as a design of a Coat of Arms. I've also done a tooled metal knight holding a shield with the coat of arms. Or you can even do Romanesque vs Gothic drawings of castles and have students include their own Coat of Arms on their architecture.
