Greek and Roman Art — A look at low relief and famous Greek and Roman people is the perfect companion to your Ancient Art unit. Look at art history sculptural work and the Greek and Roman culture. Includes 2 pages of bas-relief sculpture from Greek and Roman time periods with images. 1 page project guidelines, 10 pages Greek and Roman busts for sculpting.

This makes use of plasticine clay (the stuff that doesn't dry out). Students get to practice their sculpture skills, figure drawing and sculpting and studying famous philosophers, etc.

We used a CD-ROM cases and unassembled it to leave us with a tray to make our low relief, but you could just work on cardboard or something else similar. We used plasticine clay in natural colors. Optional tools would include clay tools, sticks, etc. just for molding but we did fine with just our hands.

Examples included in the file are actual student examples, the one on the cover of this resource is from a high school student. I have used as low as grade 5 but typically keep this with grade 6-12. Practice of figure drawing is included before sculpting so it's really a well rounded lesson.
