The best way to help train a student's eye in graphic design is just to get them looking and paying attention to design around them. I came up with a little fun here for one of our days when we just needed a break, or a fill in. This is just the list - you make up the rules. You can limit students to print only and no online resources, you can have them look for good examples and/or poor examples of each. I have included a little sketch area because I don't like my students just taking to the internet mindlessly - I want thought, time and eyes on design. I want them to start soaking design in from all around them.
If you choose to allow them digital examples, you can require the site they find it on, etc. You can have them also answer questions such as:
- why did you choose this/why does it appeal to you?
- what makes the design successful?
- what might make it stronger design?
Sometimes I will also require a certain number of them to be examples of design that aren't even in print - like architectural signage.
