I often get the question from students of WHY do we have to do sketchbook? Well… there’s lots of benefits! In addition to the reasons below I also find this helps students become responsible, get used to real-world workplace deadlines, etc. I like to start introducing these skills in upper elementary and take it into high school.
1.BOOSTS THE BRAIN
Helps boost your recall skills and sharpen your mind. Builds the basis for understanding — for example, you might dedicate a sketchbook to your studies of anatomy. Beginning from the foundational basics at the start of the book, you can track your progress as you build your understanding, with the book as a whole serving as a valuable point of reference you can use well into the future.
2. IMPROVES COMMUNICATION SKILLS
It’s a great way to visualize and communicate your thoughts, as well as express thinking in a visual way.
3. EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
You allow your emotions to flow through your drawings and help you to get a better grasp on your feelings. Through drawing, the artist can help other people cope with whatever difficulties they may be facing.
4. PRACTICE & PLAY
Sketching is practice for your final artwork, it also documents your process at how you arrived at a final project, idea, progress and mistakes. It’s something that can be edited and modified. It improves your creativity and problem solving in the process.
5. PHYSICAL BENEFITS
Drawing can also be beneficial to blood pressure, resting heart, and respiratory rate.
6. DOCUMENTS HISTORY
Use your sketches to record your life and special moments with the people you love. Your sketches an be a record of your time. Sketchbooks provide a place to document where you are currently for future reflection, both to see how far you’ve come and how far you have left to go.
7. DEVELOP CREATIVITY
Your perfect place for developing ideas —think of the act of recording ideas in your sketchbook as planting seeds. Your notes or quick thumbnails may not be something you explore immediately, but can blossom into other ideas years later when you stumble upon them while flipping through your books for inspiration.
