Part of our Art Around the World unit, this fun project has us visiting in South America.
With our first graders we practiced directed drawing and drawing from observation with these fine feathered friends. Did you know that they can live up to 80 years! They can fly up to 35 mph, mate for life, and can mimic human voices.
Our macaws are pencil and oil pastel, background is watercolor, the branch is oil pastel, and paper leaves are collaged on. Students were encouraged to add lots of leaves since Macaws live in the jungle. Oil pastel detail was added once everything was on our paper. We made sure to practice our birds before our final one - showing students step by step how to draw simple shapes of the macaw. Each one is so unique just like the real bird in the jungle!
