Bringing Ancient Greek and Roman Art to Life in the Classroom!

As part of our ongoing mission to create engaging and hands-on art in our Classical education classroom, we’ve been diving into the wonders of Ancient Greek and Roman art for our latest unit. The rich artistic heritage of these civilizations provides a perfect foundation for teaching students about architecture, sculpture, and design in a way that feels interactive and meaningful.

One of our favorite projects from this time period is where students create their own columns using everyday materials. With just a few simple supplies—like a toilet paper tube, straws, chipboard, newspaper, and glue—students can construct their own versions of Ionic, Doric, or Corinthian columns. This process allows them to explore architectural principles firsthand while fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.

We accomplished these with grade 2-5, although younger students may need a little more help with getting their pieces all together. The steps are straightforward but rewarding: gluing straws around the tube to form the column’s fluted texture, trimming them to size, adding chipboard bases and tops for stability, and sculpting details with rolled newspaper. A coat of white paint transforms the piece into a miniature replica of a column, giving students a tangible connection to the artistic achievements of the past.

This project sparks deeper conversations about how ancient architecture continues to influence modern buildings, from government structures to museums and banks. By engaging students in the process of creation, we help them appreciate the lasting impact of Greek and Roman artistry in a way that goes beyond textbooks.

We love seeing students' excitement as they bring history to life with their own hands. Our goal is always to make learning an immersive and memorable experience, and this project is just one of many ways we achieve that. Stay tuned for more ideas from our Ancient Art Timeline series—we can’t wait to share what’s next!
